TMBC HISTORY
100 YEARS OF BLESSINGS

On April 16th, 1921, a new church branched out from the Lily White Baptist Church of Gar, Indiana. I was founded and organized by Rev. White at the home of James Mickle, 3925 Deodar Street, East Chicago, Indiana. After prayerful consideration, the name Tabernacle, which means "a sacred tent and dwelling place of God" was suggested by Wiley Smith. It was approved by the members: Bro. Wiley Smith, Bro. James Smith, Bro. Robert Smith and Bro. Kent Nickle and their wives. These faithful members passed over rough roads and pitched the tent on land near turbulent waters.
The leaders, who waited in the camp, caught the glean of a new day and have each, in his turn brought us into greater avenues of success. We salute these pioneers: The Reverends White, Pates, Carter, Scott, Love, Latham, Ruffin, Allen, Morgan, Franklin and the Rev. Hunter, who put God in front and were able to hold on, carry on, and push forward.
Under the pastorate of Rev. Latham, the church location was moved from 3925 Deodar St. to 3830 Guthrie Street. After several years at this location, the membership voted to build a new Tabernacle. Two lots were purchased and, with God's guidance, on November 15, 1925, the congregation moved from 3830 Guthrie to 3867-69 Pennsylvania Ave.
In October 1930, Re. S. Ruffin was called as our leader and faithfully served God and His people until February 1940.
In 1942, Rev. J.E. Allen was called to Tabernacle as God's Shepheard. Under his leadership, the church was raised and a complete basement installed. The interior was redecorated and the exterior of the church was covered with brick siding. Rev. Allen worked diligently for the church and the youth of the community.
In May 1950, Rev. William Morgan accepted the call of pastor and served until 1952. Under his leadership, the entire church office was fully equipped and new musical instruments were purchased. The parsonage was sold and preparations were made to purchase another.
In November 1953, Rev. John Franklin was called as our leader and served until December 1961.
On November 18, 1962, God sent Rev. Dr. James H. Hunter to be the leader of His flock. Under his leadership, the time had come for a new Tabernacle in which he led. On March 17, 2019, after 26 years of dedicated service, Rev. Dr. James H. Hunter, Sr. announced his retirement from pastoring and leading TMBC. He will continue to help in the efforts to find a replacement.
